Impact on the environment


-Less fertilizers and pesticides used
-more land and water resources conserved
-Less fuel used because need not be transported over long distances
-Overproduction and wastage of resources are minimized as the production of crop is carefully monitored to meet market demand.

-More Vegetables consumed by Singaporeans grown locally

High-Tech farming in Singapore


-Aeroponics

*The roots of the plants are not soaked in a nutrient solution.
*The nutrient solution is sprayed onto the roots at present intervals.

-Hydroponics
* An intensive farming method in which plants are grown in a tough filled with a nutrient solution instead of soil.

Produce


High-Tech farming can produce a variety of other outputs that are generally of high quality.
They include vegetables (particularly those that are out of season), flowers, fruits, ornamental fish, eggs and diary products for both local and overseas market.
High input per unit area as compare to traditional farming.

Inputs


High-Tech farming requires a lot of capital inputs.
The farms have special buildings such as shelters and greenhouse to create conditions ideal for plant growth.
With the installation of new technologies such as computers and automation devices, the initial set-up cost of a high-tech farm could be as much as a few million dollars!

Why do Singapore need to grow its own food?


The two reasons are

-To overcome the shortage of land for farming
-Security reasons like e.g.
*If a war broke out, Singapore will still have food
*Do not be dependent on other countries for food.

Purpose


High-Tech farming is

-Commercial in nature.
-Increasing population
*Need to feed more people
*Increase in demand for food

What is High-Tech farming?

High-Tech farming is a knowledge-based agricultural system that make use of technology to increase the value and the quality of farm's produce.
It usually takes place in or around densely populated urban areas where land is costly and limited.

There are mainly three aspects in high-tech farming.

-Purpose
-Inputs
-Produce
